HOW TO USE THE WZ HOTEL LUZ APP
DRAW
In the “Draw” option you can create drawings freely using your finger across the grid and observe what happens to your drawing in the right part of the screen (3D preview) and also in the facade of the building.
SPEAK
In the “Speak” option you can say a word or a sentence and observe what happens to the spectrogram of your voice in the right part of the screen (3D preview) and also on the facade of the building.
DATA VISUALIZATION
In the “Data Visualization” option you can learn more about the air quality, the temperature, UV rays and the light level of your city collected during that day.
THE ENTITY
When there is no interaction happening with the facade of the hotel, a living form or as we like to call "the entity", takes possession of the site and remains wondering as it was its private habitat.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The WZ Lorena Hotel facade design was created by Estudio Guto Requena. A computer generated parametric process analyzed the sound of the building’s surrounding landscape. These collected sounds were then used to create a colorful graphic pattern. Loud sounds generated a golden color, medium level sounds a navy blue, quieter sounds were depicted in a light blue color and silence generated gray. The end result was a pixelated camouflage that visually reflected the soundscape of one of the iconic avenues of São Paulo, Avenida Rebouças.

This colorful metallic skin comes alive at night, lighting and creating an interactive dynamic with the city and its inhabitants. The "Creature of Light" that inhabits the facade of the Hotel is unpredictable, reacting in real time to environmental stimuli. Sensors installed in the building collect outside sounds. This data impacts the movement of the creature, the way in which it stirs and expands in response to the sound stimulus. Another group of sensors installed in the building collects the quality of the surrounding air, modifying the colors of the creature. Days with poor air quality cause it to display warm colors such as reds and oranges. When air quality is good, the creature uses cool colors such as blue, purple and green.

The mobile app permits two types of direct public interaction with the "Creature of Light" via touch (a visual dynamic inspired by the classic "Game of Life", a cellular automaton developed in the 1970s by British mathematician John Horton Conway - wikipedia article:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway%27s_Game_of_Life and the other through their own voice, speaking with the building and visualizing the sound waves on hotel’s facade.

A multi-touch table in Hotel WZ Lorena’s Reception area displays data collected in real time and allows guests to interact directly as the "Creature of Light."

We transformed the building into interactive architecture that responds to environmental stimuli and people as well as inviting the population of São Paulo to reflect on their own behavior.
